In this time and era, educational institutions, along with transferring knowledge, must teach some essential life skills. Among them, three are at the top of the list: Problem-solving, critical thinking and story-telling. While Mathematics, computer science and algorithmic thinking can strengthen our problem-solving skills, we rarely consider critical thinking. Philosophy is a gateway for critical thinking.
The students in STEM (Natural Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Math) need Philosophy training for the following reasons:
• It is not all about you: Religion, in one way, and science, in another way, put humankind at the center and make it the benefactor of their systems. Philosophy is the quest for truth and only truth.
• You are not alone: Philosophy gives us a holistic view beyond our limited time and space. Everything is connected. Regardless of its meaning.
• Truth is timeless: The core concept of Modernity has been “the idea of progress.” Progress was always assumed as equal to Truth. But all devastating wars and climate change easily proved us wrong. Philosophy, on the other hand, tells us, “Truth is timeless.” Things such as justice and fairness never get old (and if they get old, they are still virtuous). And they should not get compromised by the idea of progress.
• The search for meaning never ends: While working tirelessly in the labs, writing complex computer codes, decoding human genomes, and so many other scientific discoveries and technological inventions, one dangerous thing is to lose the purpose and the banality of evil. Philosophy tells us “being a high performer and successful” does not necessarily mean “ethically right.” On the other hand, a purposeful life increases our resilience to the complexities of modern life, as Nietzsche said: “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.”
